A person entitled by law to a decedent's estate. Heirs are usually determined by statutes relating to descent and distribution of estates. For example, if a person dies intestate (meaning without an estate plan), the law dictates who will receive the benefit of the decedent's property (who their Heirs are). An Heir could be a child or a more distant relative (like a third cousin).
